MENA Newswire News Desk: Abu Dhabi has launched an innovative non-invasive blood test for colorectal cancer screening, marking a key milestone in its healthcare advancements. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), in collaboration with M42, introduced the liquid biopsy test, designed to enhance early detection and risk assessment for colorectal cancer. This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to promote preventive healthcare and improve oncology care standards.

The liquid biopsy test offers a less invasive alternative to traditional screening methods, although it does not replace colonoscopies, which remain the definitive diagnostic tool for colorectal cancer. Instead, it serves as a complementary method to identify tumors and precancerous conditions in their early stages, improving patient outcomes by facilitating timely medical interventions.

Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Acting Director General of ADPHC, highlighted the significance of this development, emphasizing its role in promoting community health. “Abu Dhabi is taking a crucial step in prioritizing early cancer detection with the introduction of this innovative and non-invasive screening option. By making screening more accessible and comfortable, we aim to reduce barriers, encourage regular health checks, and standardize preventative care across the population,” he stated.

The test is integrated into the IFHAS comprehensive health screening program and is available at major healthcare facilities operated by Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and M42 across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra region. This accessibility is expected to drive higher participation rates in colorectal cancer screenings, addressing a key challenge in early detection.

Dr. Fahed Al Marzooqi, Deputy COO of M42, underscored the importance of early detection in combating colorectal cancer, which is among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the UAE. “This initiative aims to increase screening participation and improve outcomes by providing a more accessible and non-invasive option. It is a step toward building a healthier future for our communities,” he commented.

Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent cancer in Abu Dhabi, with higher rates observed among men. In 2023, 67% of new cases in the emirate were diagnosed at advanced stages, significantly impacting survival rates. Routine screenings, recommended by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi for individuals over the age of 40, remain the most effective strategy for prevention and early detection.

The introduction of the liquid biopsy test represents a transformative step in improving public health outcomes. By integrating advanced technology into routine health care practices, Abu Dhabi is poised to make significant progress in reducing cancer-related mortality and fostering a culture of preventive health awareness.
