Saudi Arabia has officially been named the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, following a decisive vote by the FIFA General Assembly in Zurich on December 11, 2024. The announcement cements the Kingdom’s place as the centerpiece for global football in what will mark the 100th anniversary of FIFA’s inaugural tournament in 1930. FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm for the decision, highlighting the overwhelming support for Saudi Arabia’s bid.

“The 2034 World Cup will be an extraordinary tournament, as it will mark the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930,” Infantino stated. He underscored the historic and symbolic significance of the event, emphasizing the unity of the international football community in backing Saudi Arabia’s proposal. The Kingdom’s bid stood out in FIFA’s technical evaluation process, achieving an unprecedented score of 419.8 out of 500.

This evaluation, announced on December 1, 2024, recognized Saudi Arabia’s robust planning and extensive infrastructure development to host the largest World Cup to date, featuring 48 participating teams. The tournament is set to take place across five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and the futuristic city of Neom. Matches will be held in 15 stadiums, 10 of which are new constructions, while existing venues in Riyadh and Jeddah will undergo significant upgrades.

The comprehensive development plan is poised to showcase Saudi Arabia’s commitment to delivering a world-class sporting spectacle. The Kingdom’s formal bid was first unveiled to FIFA in Paris in July 2023, marking the start of a year-long campaign to secure hosting rights. The Saudi Football Federation submitted the final proposal on October 9, 2023, supported by the slogan “Growing. Together.” and an official campaign identity, including a dedicated website, Saudi2034bid.com.

With the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia will become the first single nation to host a 48-team tournament, an expansion introduced to accommodate football’s growing global reach. This milestone aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiatives, reflecting the Kingdom’s ambitions to position itself as a hub for international sports and cultural events.

Preparations for the event are already underway, with Saudi officials emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity as core themes of their World Cup vision. The tournament is expected to boost tourism, infrastructure, and the Kingdom’s profile on the world stage, delivering a legacy that extends well beyond the final whistle. By MENA Newswire News Desk.
