The number of aircraft operated by South Korean airlines reached a record high of 416 in 2024, according to data submitted to Rep. Lee Yeon-hee of the Democratic Party. This marks the highest figure since the country first registered a private aircraft in 1977, a local news agency reported. The data showed a net increase of 23 aircraft from the previous year, with the total fleet comprising 42 cargo planes. The growth is expected to continue in 2025, as domestic carriers plan to introduce 54 new aircraft while phasing out 38 older models.

Korea’s airline industry marks record 416 planes in 2024

South Korea’s airline industry has seen a steady increase in fleet size over the years, surpassing 300 aircraft in 2015 and peaking at 414 in 2019 before experiencing a decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent rebound underscores the sector’s recovery and expansion efforts. Korean Air led the market with 165 aircraft, representing 39.7% of the total fleet. Asiana Airlines followed with 83 planes, while low-cost carrier Jeju Air operated 41 aircraft. The latter figure includes the plane lost in the December 29 crash that resulted in 179 fatalities.

Regarding aircraft manufacturers, Boeing accounted for 62% of the total fleet, with 258 aircraft, while Airbus supplied 38%, totaling 158 planes. The strong presence of Boeing and Airbus reflects the reliance of South Korean carriers on these major manufacturers for their fleets. The continued expansion of South Korea’s airline industry signals a robust recovery in air travel demand. With new aircraft acquisitions planned for the year, the total fleet size is expected to rise further, reinforcing the country’s position in the global aviation market. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
