United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August to discuss a potential agreement aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting, which Trump described as a critical step toward achieving peace, comes amid reports that negotiations between the parties have reached an advanced stage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been engaged in talks with both Washington and Moscow in recent weeks, with discussions reportedly focusing on the terms of a possible ceasefire.
The conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 following Russia’s invasion, has entered its fourth year with heavy human and economic costs. According to United Nations estimates, tens of thousands of civilians and combatants have been killed, while millions have been displaced within Ukraine and across Europe.
